Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno was stretchered off against Brighton in their 2-1 defeat at the Amex Stadium after a dangerous challenge from Neal Maupay. He’ll definitely miss the rest of the season but it’s being rumoured that Leno will be out injured for a year, meaning he’ll miss the entirety of next season as well. With that being said, Leno has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season, saving Arsenal from conceding multiple goals and avoiding embarassing defeats. His absense will be known for the gunners and they will be needing a replacement for next season but the question is, who will fill in for Leno?
Emiliano Martinez is the longest serving member in the current Arsenal squad and has waited his entire career to be Arsenal’s number one. This is his chance to prove his worth for the remainder of the season and if Leno is out for next season as well, Martinez needs to prove to Arsenal that they won’t be needing to sign a new goalkeeper for next season and he’s the man for the job.
However their is doubts for Martinez as Leno was such an immense goalkeeper that he needs to match Leno numbers. With the Coronavirus situation Arsenal will need for Martinez to succeed so that they don’t spend money on a new temporary keeper. However if Martinez isn’t the man for the job, their will be cheap and quality still open for Arsenal. Last summer PSG signed Keylor Navas from Real Madrid and sent their back up goalkeeper Alphonso Areola to Real Madrid to challenge Thibuat Cortouis. Courtouis has started to show Madrid his worth and Areola has barely received any game time. With him returning to PSG next season, he won’t receive much game time over Navas and could be out next season for another loan. Arsenal could loan in Areola next season and they would have a great keeper who has been unfortunate to play behind a world class keeper Keylor Navas. A loan deal would make the signing cheap and Arsenal would have a quality keeper as they miss out on Leno next season.
